How to make a book & bind it with spoolknitting
A few years ago, I took a workshop on book binding. The workshop was about making a medieval bound book, and I really enjoyed it. I made 2 of the complicated little books, and gave one to Jim.
Neither of us has ever used the books, as they are so gorgeous that they intimidate us and neither of us can imagine actually using them.
I decided that I would much rather make simple little books that are not in the least bit daunting to make - OR- to use.
And, if I reclaimed paper that was heading trashwards, then that would be even better.
AND…. if I could combine it with spool knitting……….
well, then, that would be a real winner!
So, I designed these little books………

Here’s how to make them:
Spool knit a cord,
using a 2 or 3 peg spool knitter to make a thin-ish cord.![]()
Make the cord anywhere from 11 to 18 inches long.![]()
then…..
You can use all kinds of things for covers:
Leather, fabric scraps, old maps, even wood…..
This pic shows the direction you will stitch the cord, remembering that the open edges are the ones that get stitched. The folds are the outside edges of the paper, capturing the used side of the paper inside.
The ends of the cord go back through the center hole and are tied in a knot. Add beads, buttons or charms to the cord ends.
You can also do one more stitch, into each of the end holes, if you want to make it a touch more elaborate:
Decorate the cover with crocheted, tatted, woven, knitted, embroidered or other motifs or swatches:
It’s quick and easy to replace pages when they get filled up, so, actually using the little book is not a problem!
I love these little books, and hope you’ll enjoy them. They make great little gifts. (for your friends, and for yourself!)
hugs all round,
Noreen

What a great idea, and a great tutorial, too. I am always looking for innovative and practical ways to incorporate my crochet into gifts and my own life, and this is a perfect way.
I love the site, and thank you for the post :-)

This would be great to use with examples of the kinds of different patterns..ie..purl, knit, well I can’t think of any off hand but when you find a pattern you like, make a sample, write the instructions and put it in the little book..you might be able to pass it on to new learners or children, grandchildren..even using a crochet hook or knitting needles to make the patterns…I love the book
